Pop Art: art inspired by modern pop culture and the mass media, popular in the 50s and early 60s.

Some of the most popular pop art pieces are painting of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhole.

Andy Warhole:was an American artist, director and producer that flourished in the 1960s. Born in 1928 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his pieces are now some of the expensive paintings ever sold.  He was a leading figure in a new art movement, pop art. He is an inspirational figure who although going through some very hard times in his life, such as illnesses like Sydenham’s chorea (a nervous system disease) and the death of his father at the young age of 13, he managed to lead in the modern arts. Below is one of the Marilyn Monroe Paintings. We liked this piece as it showed typical elements of 1960 pop art in the shapes and vibrant colours of the piece.

Marilyn Monroe:born on the 1stof July 1962 she overcame a difficult childhood. Her mother gave her up for adoption as she was too ill to cope. She went from foster home to foster home and had been sexually abused on many occasions before she even turned 11. She dropped out of school to marry her boyfriend at the young age of 15. Soon after she was scouted and decided she would like to act, the lifestyle of which made her feel loved. Her films had, by the time of her unexpected death in 1962, grossed over $200 million. She had gone through anxiety and depression both caused by her sad and traumatic childhood and yet she managed to overcome it and do the things she had loved; acting and singing.

Modern Pop Art: We want to show that even now in the 21stcentury pop art can still be relevant. As an example we found a piece by Kendrick Daye. The piece is of Nicki Minaj. It follows the typical ‘rules’ of pop art but instead of being inspired by media in the 1950-60s it is inspired by a more modern celebrity. Like Marilyn Monroe, Nicki Minaj is famous although relevant to the modern age rather than the 50s so even if the colours and person change the inspiration is still based on the same themes.
